yes thats a british 1886 large penny (corrected from cent opps) --with queen victoria on the front --and brittannia (british equal to "lady liberty") on the rear wiyj the trident === represents the fact britian was a "sea power" -- and the sheild the fact that her "sea forces" protect "mother england" --- by looking at the front (where the queen victoria is)--you can tell if it was for british home use or for colony use(say canada) by the wording on it --

Technically, it's a penny, not a "cent," as Great Britain did not employ a decimal-based coinage system at that time:

4 farthings = 1 penny

12 pence (pennies) = 1 shilling

20 shillings = 1 pound

21 shillings - 1 guinea

The total mintage for 1886 was 6,088,000. (This does not include proofs.)

As ivan salis has noted, the symbolic figure of Britannia appears on the reverse.

The inscription surrounding Queen Victoria's portrait on the obverse is Latin (somewhat abbreviated) and means, "Victoria, by the grace of God, queen of the Britains [i.e., Great Britain and its commwealth nations and territories], defender of the faith."

This coin is valued at $2.50 in Fine condition.

Hey Users of T-Net friends!
Thanks for all the info!
One must wonder how something like this would get lost on a football field.
My guess?
"Field" dirt?

Rae; it's yours but only if you agree to give it back if I ever get down to my last penny! :)

May all your finds result in happy feet!
