I am still very new to this. I have been out digging holes about three times. Have found mostly junk and some clad. My problem is pinpointing an object. I sweep the coil over the target several times and from different directions. When I get a good feel for where it is, I dig. More often than not, I am 3-4 inches off. Is there a technique that works better or is that just the way it is. I just want my holes to be as small a possible to avoid complaints. :

So far, I think I lile searching the beaches best - easy digging and not a lot of junk.

You could either invest in a pinpointer or do practice digs first to see exactly where your coil is picking it up.
Bury several items and mark them with toothpick...bury at different levels...see exactly where your coil is picking it up...some machines will always hit to the left or right...I had an old bounty hunter like that once...always about two inches off to the left...learning your machine really helps..is it consistantly off when you dig deep or shallower?

I like to go as slow as I can until I here the first beep ...then go the otherdirection until I hear another...trying to get it in a visual crosshair.....

it sounds like you are not using the pinpoint feature on your ace 250. read the owners manual concerning the pinpoint feature, or go to this link at the garrett website http://www.garrett.com/hobby/techsupport/pinpointing.htm it has info on pinpointing with the ace. after that it comes down to practice practice practice! ;)

Thanks hollowpointred, somehow i had missed the pinpoint feature while reading. 4 kids, 2dogs and a wife. guess i was distracted. I'm sure that info will help a lot.

The center of the target is at the inside edge of the inner loop. Also, you can go to Garrett.com and see a description of how to pinpoit with an Ace there. 8)

Hi Tony
Doesn't the hot spot move down the centre of the coil with the Ace as target depth increases ?
Long time since I tried the machine out but I think thats what I remember.
TH try lifting the coil when you think your centered and do a few more sweeps. It should help.

Good replies to a good question..there's nothing worse than scratching an old coin when you're off target.
