I have been researching an area using an old reconnaisance map of the Rev. war. The questions I have are about some of the symbols and wording on this map.

# 1 What does it mean when areas are marked "contingent" and have a little square of dots?

# 2 There are five sided (pentagram like) markings on the highest topo ares here and there.

# 3 Bluffs and ridges also have squares or three sided markings?

Just curious

#2 is a pentagon

#1 coniengent is a group of troops -- the dots represent the number of troops (one dot is equal to so many troops)

#2 the pentagon shapes are forts ---- take note that their on the "high" ground of the area

#3 the squares --more troops --the triangles may be either calvary troops or possibly cannon locations

I appreciate the quick answers! I am just learning this stuff. HAHAHAHA at 44 :D

Very intresting ... There is soo much history around Chester County PA during the Rev. war. Its hard knowing where to start.
I need to start talking to the farmers for sure!

I'll keep plugging away.
