I found these in a ghost town I have been searching off and on. A homeowner let me search the corner lot near his house and says a livery stable used to occupy the site back when the town existed.
I placed the Indian cent in the pic (dug at the site) for dating and size reference. I know what the buckle is, but I'm mostly curious if anybody knows what the ID tag was used for.
I was guessing the tag was attached by a leather strap. I did a search but the results were overwhelming and most of them had nothing to do with brass id tags.
As you can see, it has V. S. 25 stamped into it. There was a U.S. post office across the street. I know there was a time when V was used for a U, but I'm guessing that practice died out long before the civil war.
The other is a copper/brass ring. Horse tack?
Sadly the site is blanketed with large iron and soft sand. I found a 1960 Canadian at 8 inches so most good targets are probably really deep mingled with the iron.
The targets in the photo were intertwined with tree roots which could be part of the reason they were held near the surface.
TIA,
Ran
