I finally got around to taking the old men's ring I detected a couple of weeks ago to a jeweler today. The stone did scratch glass, but was in a 10kt gold plated ring, so I didn't get hopes up very high. The jewelry store was very nice about testing the stone and even showed me how they did it.
As for the educated. The store has a little device that looks kind of like one of those new self-contained soldering irons that they use. It has a tip they press onto the stone and a little LED that reads from "Metal" to "Diamond" and has a sliding light scale that indicates what's what. Real kewl! LOL
I managed to get over the the neighbor's place yesterday afternoon and detected for a bit. They had company and everyone watched at first. First find was a dime. Needless to say, they were impressed. I turned the detector over to the older kids and let them use it. We found a bullet casing, a nickel and a penny. Pretty kewl....the kids loved it! No, I didn't make them split with me. Whatever they found, they kept.
Anyway, HH, ya'll!
