I found this handle this evening at the Revolutionary War site that I have been hunting for the past few months. I believe this is a handle...There is a design on the front with "X" all around it. The back looks like a mark on it but I can't make it out. I believe it's something like "X7" but I can't tell without cleaning it up more. I would like to know what type of metal this is. It's very heavy so I was thinking brass or pewter. Does anyone know what this is and how can I clean this to see the markings? Thanks in advance.

It almost feels like it's two different metals. The front is very smooth and shiny brass color (with dark brown/black tarnish) and the back part is rough and more silver with rust. Anyone have any thoughts on cleaning it? I tried metal polish but I don't think it helped.
