I have read back on some of the threads and some have gave opinions on recommended ancestry DNA kits although threads may be a few years old. I did a google search and opinions vary. Most of us know our ancestry back a few hundred years, I am interested in ancient geographic origins of the family line.
There's Germany, Switzerland, Wales, England but would be good to see percentages and other countries on the continents that I am not aware of. I do not care about finding thousands of unknown relatives so I guess registering online is an option?
What I know about my mothers side of the family is more interesting so maybe a test that works best for the maternal side.
MyHeritage DNA seems to be agreeable as a good test, opinions welcome.

I've done three different ones. Each had different results. One showed me as predominantly Nordic. :o Interesting, because half my family is from Southern Italy. The other side is Pennsylvania Dutch, came over in 1700's .... I'm 5'-7", olive skin. The tall one in my family. So, unless there was some midget Vikings, I wouldn't trust any of the DNA test.

You know your history which is good.
Just my humble opinion.

It's going to depend on which parent contributed the most to your personal DNA make up. That's why brothers and sisters can look so different. These are mine from Ancestry.

Good grief, been searching, there used to be 2 companies doing this and now there are a lot more, a bit confusing reading the claims.
Neanderthal, Denisovan percentage, that may explain some things.

There is potential for abuse with these DNA outfits. There have already been some security breaches which exposed customer data.
That is enough for me to not be interested in giving them DNA. Who knows what they do with such a thing once they are done. Are they destroying it, or are they selling it to the highest bidder and for what purpose? Then the whole global DNA database thing comes up, could see how the gubment would want such data. To what end, is unknown.

I agree. Selling your most personable identity online is just incredible. What’s next, Give us your facial scan, and we will find your doppelgänger. HEY wait a minute, that’s an awesome idea. Lots of people would do this.

The whole facial thing is the least of their worries. There are satellites out there already that if focused on an area have the definition to see faces. If we have something "for fun" that can see far away galaxies what do people think the spy sats can do right here on Earth from a very short distance?
I miss days past when technology wasn't being used in a sinister way against us by our own people. There will come a time when newborns are implanted with a chip. They will try to spin it as a "way to deter kidnapping, human trafficking, etc." When in reality it is to know every single move they make. I believe there will also be a way to break past the power depletion problem too. If they can find a way for the device to continue gathering energy either through skin/solar or even harnessing the electrical current we naturally have in our bodies then it will come to pass.
Go on, laugh and make fun.. But how many people who were born back in the 40's would have ever thought a day would come when a company created living animals from the bone DNA of an extinct animal? (Dire wolf resurrection)
Sometimes you get too advanced and meddle around with things you shouldn't.

I took the ancestry test. It confirmed what I thought. I’m mixed European. The test couldn’t pin down any very specific areas. A percentage of this, a percentage of that. My mom was adopted and we finally located her family and history. It also told me what I’m not. African or Jewish. Sometime later I got an email through Ancestry from a lady in CA. She took the test and found out she’s the illegitimate daughter of one of my cousins. Welcome to the family!

I see the points. Over my lifetime health providers and military hospitals have drawn a lot of vials of blood for health purposes. During covid I went through the drive through pharmacy window several times for a nose swab.
All for health intentions and most of it voluntary and there are files, maybe in a salt cave and who knows where.
Out of curiosity, I thought the family origins test an interesting idea. Thanks, you given me points for thought.

I sent mine in to Ancestry, and confirmed I'm from an extensive line of complete assholes. Hey, you never know!:occasion14:

One of the good things about ancestry.com is that your ethnic mix will be updated as their dataset grows. Over time that means that the accuracy of the estimate goes up. As this estimate has changed it has fallen very well in line with my genealogy research. Some people have trouble wrapping their heads around why that is a good thing. My current results for reference:

You look back 150 years, for any group, and living to be 70 years old was quite a feat. Only the strong survived.
Medicine/surgery has saved my life several times, and I’m 66. The warrior clans had to have been tough people.

I used Ancestry.com and get notified on new matches.

From what I somewhat understand about different tests

Y-DNA= patrilineal
mtDTN or mitochondrial=matrilineal
autosomal =both maternal and paternal

So depending on what test one chooses, percentages would vary a lot with autosomal being the mix.

What started the curiosity, actually yesterday was doing some family research and way back there was a link to both, Israel and Iran. I had never heard that before and I realize that genealogy is less reliable the farther you try to go back. 300 years ago, same as today there were other people with the same first and last name living in the same country or state.
On the family bible I can go back to 1850 although I am researching way further back . It is an interest and a challenge.

I have traced some of my ancestors back to 1000 AD. During the shut down I joined and started tracing family history, very interesting. Traced history in America to 1640 before hit road block and in United Kingdom to just under 1000 AD. Found some famous and infamous ancestors thanks to their record keeping.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but ... each parent contributed almost exactly half. The iffy things are which part of their DNA did they pass on and what parts of either parent express dominantly. This is so complicated. I need a martinus :D
