Hello again! :)

An interesting gold seal ring was found in central Ukraine (Tyasmin river shores) accompanied by Scythian arrowheads, Roman denarii and some medieval stuff. 7,4 g

A small cross on top, the Golgotha cross in a central cartouche and clearly readable IOHANN.E. (owner's name?) are understood. But what are the other two letters/symbols?
Can anyone also help with dating the ring?

I say WOW! :o
I guess, the symbol at 9 o'clock is a Trident.
At 10 o'clock is a snake/serpent or dragon.
The symbol at 2 o'clock reminds me of fish for some reason.
I'm looking forward to an expert stepping in here :help:

Its an amazing piece. I know nothing about this culture, but I could make a guess based on UK Medieval Seals. The symbol before the name IOHANN.E. could mean 'seal of'. Just a guess :dontknow:

Well, I suppose at 9 o'clock is just a letter E.

I guess it's of W.Europe origin, not a local one. So the symbol before the name can trully be 'seal of'. Thanks for that!
Can it be a crusader ring? Or later?

I not an expert on these, but I think its possible to be a crusader era. The cross on the mount is a well used Christian symbol & the styles of the letters are similar to 13th century UK lettering. So not the first crusades but one of the later??

It rather has German roots. Remember Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), "Historia von Dr. Iohann Fausten, dem weitbeschreiten Zauberer und Schwartzkünstler etc."(1587) etc.?

clearly readable IOHANN.E.

I think it is simply IOHANN. If the E were part of the name, it would be a block letter like the other letters.

As trikikiwi said, I suspect the "E" is a symbol or possibly a psi or an epsilon.

I really doubt about it. The inscription goes round making a circle. All letters are pointing their bottoms to the centre of the bezel. And this ‘symbol’ is situated alike making it a letter E. Whether it’s a block letter or not just does not matter. I’ve some experience of reading medieval seal matrixes and there are some with both types of letters even in one word. It really depended on an engraver how to put a letter. On some Russian seals letter E is even in a level position, making it look like a psi but being E :)

Furthermore, what is a possible reason for a Greek psi or an epsilon to be a part of the Latin inscription? :dontknow:

I still think IOHANN is separate. That is why there is a dot. This dot technique is also used on some medieval seals indicating a separation of words or abbreviations. Perhaps the "E" is not an epsilon or psi, but it just doesn't look like an E in my opinion. Nor does the next character look like a S. I'm guessing these are symbols or other non-latin letters. I'm only trying to offer some possibilities.

I agree with DCMatt. That is an incredible find! Did you find it?

A dot generally symbolizes a break between words. The small cross is start and end.

IOHANN. E. SQUIGGLE . ETC

Victoria . Regina . Dei . Gratia . etc.

I agree its an E for the last name, & they often put dots in between words.
