He wanted me to take a look at it. It has been in his family for almost 40 years.

I don't have the heart to tell him but I think he has a counterfit coin. It is very well made but I think I see a seam mark on the edge. That tells me it has been cast. I am not an expert so I will not even hint at it. It does have the heft of one ounce.

If you really think it is not the real deal, you should tell him. I agree with the other reply that it is your duty as a friend.

Give him some ideas on how to find out for sure... bring it to an expert, weight it, etc.

Let us know if he finds out anything new on it.

His grandfather bought it when he was born, it was then passed on to his dad, then passed on to him when his dad died. Lots of sentiment there, that is why i didn't say.

I am no expert on counterfits unless it is an obvious fake. I may ask him to take it to a coin dealer to appraise it.

Unless your friend is a little girl. He should be able to take it. The truth that is. And in any case it would relieve him to know the true value of the coin.
