Hit a new Field today with my newest toy a XP Goldmaxxpower the first thing I noticed about the machine was the lightness this was one of the reasons I purchased it along with the quick recovery, coke rejection, etc, finds were not particularly thick on the ground however I did manage a silver button and a silver fragment of a bowl or cup. After the morning session on the new field I decided to head back to one of my favourite fields this is the one that produced the silver hammereds last season, the field is quiet but I know good finds are there you just have to be patient, in the past I have always thought that this area could produce Saxon finds as the church that stands near by is said to date back to the seventh century but I must admit I was starting to have my doubts. Heading down towards the river I had a nice to way signal just below the surface I saw the greenish object rubbing away the soil I could see the tell tale shape of the strap end one side was flat and plane the outher has delicate markings of fantastic animals with traces of gilding the pictures do not show this up very well but I will try to get better ones after it is cleaned, this field also gave up a hammered silver of Edward the first 1272-1307 which has a reverse legend error for Canterbury, hope you enjoy the pictures.

Re: A fist for me (SAXON STRAP END)

The silver button could be half of a 18th century cufflink.

Although we only just had our first Viking Strapend, we have never had a Saxon one. A truely excellent find. You must be chuffed with it. Pick through that field & empty it of iron nails :)

Pardon the pun but I am going to hammer it :D

Excellent Finds!!

Beautiful hammered silver! That strap end reminds me of several utensil handle ends I have found, Saxon finds are hard to come upon, congrats. HH, Mike

THIS DESERVES MORE ATTENTION.

Just so everyone reading this gets the picture, A Anglo-Saxon Strap-end of this date 7th-9th Century (Over 1000 years old) & complete is a FIND OF A LIFE TIME for most British detectorist's.

CONGRATS

Just to hold that much history in the palm of my hand for just one moment would be a life time dream come true.
Congrats Tyre. :-* HH

I,m new to all of this , just what is a strap end ?

Picture 3 - Its the metal end to a belt. If you look at the top of the piece you will see 2 rivet holes where it attached to the leather (the thin end is an beasts head). Saxon strapends were highly decorated with interlaced beasts etc... The meaning & magic of these pieces are often lost in history. The person wearing it was showing his status (might have been a sword belt strap-end) & it may have held a protective quality or meaning to the individual.
