I got out again for a few hours after work today, poking around my yard.? I have a five-acre lot at the edge of town on the site of an old farm.? Part of the property was also a popular drinking spot for local teens for years, so there are a LOT of pull-tabs, bottle caps and cans around.?

I dug a whole bunch of pull-tabs and bottle caps today, mixed with a variety of square nails, fence wire, and metal scraps.? I was kind of bummed because I didn't find any coins today.? There is a small burial plot on the property with two stones (that I can see).? One is "Patience Adams, born 1781 ---" the rest is broken off.? The other says "Capt. P.H. Adams 1799-1869."? I stopped to look at them and then headed back toward the house.

On the way, I got a good signal and dug up an old Navy uniform button.? It's two piece, with the back imprint "Best & Co. New York."? ?I couldn't help but wonder if Capt. P.H. Adams was a Navy captain....? I guess I'll have to cough up the dough for one of those uniform button reference books.? I already ordered a coin book.

I got another good signal under the "$1" icon on my Ace 250.? I dug for a bit and saw a large silver coin stuck in the clay.? As I started rubbing the clay off the exposed side, the first thing I saw was a nice, sharp "1901"!? ?:o? Yahoo!?

Then I pulled it out of the clay and noticed it was very light.? Further cleaning revealed it was a President McKinley coin from the Shell "Mr. President" game.? ? :-\? ? Must have been some gas station hand-out.? Oh well... it gave me a thrill for a minute!

I hope everyone had a good day,

Sounds like you have a neat built in site to hunt. It will take a long time to cover 5 acres. You can save it for those times when you just can't get away but can still have fun detecting a little at a time. I just got permission to hunt a similar site any time I have time, though it is not so old. Mid 1800's. My wife & the accountant kept me a little too busy to hit it today, but I got those infernal tax returns in the mail.

Good luck & keep us posted. Spotz

You really got me excited there for a moment!? I thought I was there!? Great story and yes, 5 acres is a lot of territory to cover.? Also, by it being a famous drinking, party area, no telling what you might find there.? Sure, lots of tabs, but you should find some other goodies as well.? Ever been around a drunk that don't know where they are?? The get really "loose" and everything sorta of flys.? ? BTW Spotz, sure hope you sent the check to me instead of them.? If you did, I will go ahead and order my DFX too!? ((((LOL)))

I guess a lot of drunks probably do lose things. Up to, and including their virginity, but I don't think my Ace 250 can locate any of that. :D

I took a break from the party area and searched more in the area where I found the Navy button yesterday. The little Ace 250 gave a good signal and I started digging. Deep. I finally pulled out a very old wheatie; 191-. It's very corroded though and I was bummed about that. It looks like either 1911 or 1914.

I found the general area where the shale fill from the construction of my house gives way to good ol' Lake Champlain Valley clay. I'll be searching a lot when I get some time.

I'm enjoying the hobby and have already considered spending my income tax return on a better MD, not that I don't love my 250.

Good hunting,
