Want to share some pictures from a great week of detecting with some forum friends. I invited Seeker (Alaskan George) and Arkansas Gary to Germany for a week of detecting. What a great time we had, was really nice detecting with these guys and the conversation all week of detecting was just great. To top it off, we had sunny blue sky all week, cool in the morning and mild in the afternoon, the weather doesn?t get better for detecting, just perfect! We all found some very nice finds and Seeker found the first gold from the fields I detect in the form of a more modern 10K thick gold ring, sorry no pic of it. Here?s some of the better finds from the week. This is a Hitler Youth cap badge Gary found on a field where Hitler was present for a parade, it?s the 4th Swastika found around there as I?ve found 3 small pins/badges. It needs a proper cleaning but it is in very good condition but missing the back pin.
I set up a private tour of our small but excellent museum last night through my Archaeologist friend and found my Archie friend speaks very good English, I had no idea his English was so good. Gary?s Hitler Youth badge was in one of the displays.
Another nice find from Gary, a Bavarian Krieger Bund BKB crest. That?s the equivalent of the American VFW, Veterans of Foreign War. My Archie friend estimated the crest to be over 100 years old, before World War One. It?s a very nice find and will clean up much better, here it?s been simply rinsed off with water and the picture is not as nice as it really looks.
A picture of myself in the middle, George on the right and Gary on the left.
Here is one of my better finds of the week, a small bronze coin weight. It has a coat of arms with 3 Fluer De Lis (flowers) and letters around the legend. I have no idea what coin it weighted but hope to find out. I?m soaking it in olive oil to remove the patina as there is a fine sand coating embedded into the upper part of the weight within the patina, there is a crown at the top of the coat of arms. I?m certain more detail will come out of it.
Here is my best find of the week. A beautiful bronze seal matrix, 42 mm in length, fits perfect between the thumb and index finger.
Here is the seal image of the matrix. I have oriented it to what you would see after stamping it into a dripping of wax. This is my impression of what I can see of the seal. At the top is a persons upper torso, hand on hip on your right side, left side arm extended into the air holding an over sized arrow. Below the arrow is the initial ?M?. To the right arm the initial ?R?. Below the upper torso a coat of arms embraced by a reef, within the coat of arms a smaller duplicate of the upper torso holding the arrow. Please let me know what you think it might mean, it?s possible to trace this back and get the name and occupation of it?s owner. These seal matrixes are very personal finds and this is probably the only one in the world like it, I have found 4 or 5 now and think they are awesome.
I found 8 silver coins this week, 7 in the 1800s and one from around 1750. This is the obverse of an 1814 Preussen (Prussian) something like 84/120s of a Thaler. The word Thaler is where the word Dollar comes from.
The reverse of the 1814, nice condition except for the scratches on the obverse. We found many other nice finds this week, 11 beer tokens on one field, I found 10 lead seals one day, many coins however, the oldest coin find this week was by George, a 1701 copper in nice condition. What a great week it was detecting with two friends with some impressive finds by all! HH and thanks looking, Mike
