Well, I can't say I dug lots of silvers like a lot of you pirates did this weekend (lol), but I did get out for a while yesterday, with TreasureFiend, Mikewaz, and BillT. We hit a few areas, kind of jumped around a bit. I didn't find any coins of historical significance (unless the 1920 wheatie counts), but I did manage an old trade token. I couldn't find any information on its origins, but it is cool. I also found what is probably an item of no importance, but I figured I'd check with you guys in case before I tossed it into the box-o-crap. It is the round item with a hole in the center, one side says "Webster Chicago Corporation", and on the other side it says "Patent Applied For". UPDATE: Bill, you were right. It IS indeed part of some electrical audio equipment (wire recorder?) manufactured by Webster-Chicago, they were in business in the earlier part of this century. http://www.webster-chicago.com/

I also found yet another relic from Chicago's bygone days as a MAJOR livestock market (remember the bull medallion?). This was dug at our last location, it was about 8 inches deep and rang up as a quarter. I couldn't read it until I got home and cleaned it a bit. It is a small, copper oval disk, with a chicken sitting on eggs in the center, and around the edge it says, "Illinois Poultry and Egg Shippers Assn." I looked this up to no evail. Do any of you guys have any recollection of this? I figure it wasn't a major, or at least long-lived, operation, as no info came up when it was Googled.

I tried my hand at snagging a silver rosey in an area Bill has found many. In fact, he said the particular area gives up many Rosies to him, and he often visits this place for a silver fix when he cannot find any elsewhere. A couple hours here and lots of clad coins later, no silver of any kind was found. We all had a great time, Kermit got his silver at the first spot, and we all were chased away a great spot from mosquitoes. Thanks for any help with my found items in advance, I am looking forward to getting in on some more hunts with you guys in the future!

Joe

Nice finds... See if that fits in the center of a little .45 single. That's the only thing I see especially for a record player.

Great job Joe!!!

Those are worth silver digs to me anytime Joe, they ae great, even if it only turns out HTN (Hey that's neat) value applies. For that saloon token, check the local directories between 1900-1912, that's when most of that style were made if I recall. Got one of those egg shipper's tags once also, specialized cartage I suppose, eggs. Not sure what it represents, a tag that went out with shipments to ensure no free lancers, or scabs were deliivering or what.

Hey I got an id tag today that was blank on both sides, obviously worn by The Unknown Entity. Dog, cow, primate, who knows?

Trash got a BFF Cheerleader pin!

Wanna trade?!?

Great relics Joe! Good to see you got out this weekend. Even though I had to basically come home at noon both days, I got plenty of hunting in... got a suntan/burn... and met a lot of new faces. Great weekend. I hope future weekends are the same :)

Nice token Joe! I'd love to dig one as nice as that.
Also, here's a pic of your 45 record adapter in a collection of others.
Hey, we missed ya out there the last 2 days. I told Brett that you'd probably be there with the Excal before sunrise today.

Great set of relics Joe!
It's been a while since I've seen one of those 45rpm record plucs ;D (I'm really getting old :P)

Nice finds, Joe!! That's a cool token!!!

We missed you guys out there!

Most of the inserts for 45's that I had were plastic. We called them spiders. I have an old 45 laying around here if you want it. ;D

Hey Mark, weren't all your records 78's? :o

Aw geez Neil, every summer Mrs. Lowbatts breaks out the spindled beast and throws on The Turtles 45's she got when she was 9 or 10.

"Mrs. Brown you've got a lovely daughter.."

ARGHHH!

Which brings me to my story about how I obtained this sunburn.

After checking out the flea market at Allstate yesterday morning, my girlfriend and I went to the beach so that I could actually use the Excal. Seemed half the city of Chicago was there. Traffic was horrible, took an hour to get there. Then about 45 minutes to find a parking spot. Even the pothole-laden lot south of the huge sledding hill was packed. Eventually I found parking at Foster, and we walked all the way down to Montrose. Once at the beach, she unfolded her little chair so she could watch me dig her gold rings. I turned the Excal on and immediatly noticed something was wrong. All I was getting was a super loud blurting noise, no matter how I adjusted the settings. I figured it was because the battery wasn't charged enough even though I had charged it a few weeks ago. Frustrated, I sat in the sand staring at the wonderful sundial I created by leaning the Excal against the upright sand scoop digger. That was the best part of yesterday's hunt, making a damn sundial. I must have sat there digging a hole to China for an hour before we left, the entire time, the sun beating down on my back. What a sunburn I have from that!

So I charged up the Excal and it works fine, thanks to the fine folks over at the beach and shallow water forum. Man, this Excal sure is a lot different from the others I've used. I'll have to get used to charging it up all night prior to a hunt, since it doesn't hold a charge very long, from what I gather.

I hope to get out again this weekend if it doesn't rain.

Joe

Ouch. The back of my legs are burnt, and my neck is a little toasted but otherwise alright. Next time I'll bring some spray on STL... makes it easier in my opinion.

As for your Excal... I'm pretty sure it has NiMH batteries in that pack. They shouldn't self discharge in 3 weeks unless they are the crappiest chinese batteries ever, which is hard to come by because even the no-name china battery mfg's are all fairly decent. I'm guessing there must be some continuous quiescent current flowing out of the battery pack, into the Excal's circuitry somehow. With all of those dials though, I would think there would just be a nice dial switch that kills the power... so it's still a mystery. As a test, you could charge the pack... and disconnect it from the detector for storage. Let sit for 3 weeks and try it out. Charging up the night before is always a good idea too ;)

The Turtles didn't do "Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter". (That was Herman's Hermits.)
They did do "Eleanor, gee I think you're swell..."
I wish I had all the 45s that were around the house - lots of
Motown and pop hits - but unfortunately most became frisbees at some point.

Anyways - very cool finds!

Only a true hippie would know that, Mayo! And for your next one:

Where do all the hippies meet?
South Street, South Street....

Oh Baby meet me on South Street,
C'mon, Baby C'mon....

Yeah but their big hit was "Happy Together"---In later years and maybe still, they are called "Flo and Eddie"--Went to go see Alice Cooper when I was 18 at the Stadium, and Flo and Eddie were to be the warm-up group for him. Had no idea who they were until they came out singing Happy Together. Turns out they were Gay guys and spent the whole concert sticking their hands in each others pants and crap. 35 years ago it was quite a shocker!
