all 2354 U.S. army great seal buttons came from 1 hole, I had to opt for a sifter because I thought my detector was going to explode.
Yeah, I believe these were in a fire, they came from a small dump at a training camp. They probably burned the dump periodically. Some of the bottles were pretty melted. I did find some buttons in a sand layer that were like brand new. I don't really know why there were so many buttons maybe they were complete uniforms, why would they burn them? I found this dump by complete accident. I was digging exploded ordnance from the top of a mesa, I looked down at the base of the mesa and saw a couple rows of boulders and a faint road coming from the training camp about a quarter mile away. I hiked down the hill and noticed broken glass and a couple buttons on the surface, that's when my machine overloaded. good thing I carry a small sifter in my truck! Sure was exciting, got alot of cool stuff but can't go back because it became a county open space park.dkw said:Have they been in a fire? You've got to tell the story behind this find.
I wondered about that epidemic thing too because of all those dog tags buried with the buttons. I do know another guy in Colorado that stumbled into one of Custer's camps and they burned the uniforms of the deserters, he found over 100 eagle buttons in the pile!Montana Jim said:Too bad they are great seal and not eagles!
Holy freaking crap! THAT's a helluva pile-o-buttons...
I bet they were on uniforms burned a pile after a sickness, or some kind of epidemic where they had to burn all the used clothes. Or, Maybe the quartermaster's storage shed burned down....
How very interesting...
