Well like my Dad said... we got out to da grove again and we started pounding the ground lookin' for loot. We got there at about 7am and it was on like donkey kong! I had some ideas about where to go once we got there, but that more or less got thrown to the wind once we started hearing the onslaught of detector melody.
I got the 1906-d barber and about freaked out... because this was after my Dad had his for quite a while. I yelled for him but I didn't see him anywhere. Then I stood up and got another great dime signal, two barbers I asked!? Then out popped the 1917-s Merc, just 3" over from where the barber came from. Then I saw my Dad magically appear and was standing to my left, I yelled out whoohoo with the thumbs up. He came over as I revealed the Merc, and I said... "we'll I guess that makes 42" ... he had this puzzled look because he didn't see the barber yet. Then I opened up my case and said this one is #41.
At some point later in the day I got a super deep wheatie that sounded so faint, but pinpointed well enough. I was hoping it would be something better, but just the fact that it was a wheatie and in the center of the deep hole was enough to make me smile. The depth meter on the E-Trac said 10", but the turf was just about 9". I swear I saw a 22 on it, but it turned out to be a 1927.
The oldest wheatie is a '17, there's also a '27, '41, '42 and 35'.
I was trying to explain to my wife earlier the essence of metal detecting, why we do it. It's a lot of work to come home with silver, if you can manage it. Getting hardly any sleep, waking up early, driving all of the way out to the site, sun screen lotion application, gear up, swing coil for hours on end, get a signal and not think it's going to be anything great, and then after opening the hole it sounds REALLY good.. eyes bugging a bit trying to find it in the dirt... the edge of a coin emerges, silver, through and true. It's at that moment that everything leading up to that point and after that point for the day, melts away and you are as happy as a kid again getting a sucker after seeing the dentist.
A little over $4 in clad.
A cigarette case, looks to be gold plated. I cracked it open and about fainted when I saw what looked like the edge of a coin inside. It turned out to be pieces of broken glass, mirror is my guess. Still haven't been able to pry it fully open.
