First off you have a computer, so research known falls in your area.
Its like hunting gold, start where gold has been found.
Second yes you can strike out on your own and cover say dry lake beds also and remote mountain areas trying to find specimins.
You can also search many meteorite identification sites which will give you an idea of what they DO look like and DO NOT look like.
Third you could invest in a few samples of meteorites from Arizona to use for testing your detector and visual I.D.
This ought to get you started kid.
