All recovered yesterday from my own backyard and the surrounding wood line!

So I ventured out after work this evening to get my fix:laughing7: and not really expecting to find much, as I've hunted my yard pretty thoroughly..or so I thought..

I decided to head into the woods where i've searched a bit but only found garbage and LOTS of shotgun shell tops.. On my way there I decided to scan the small area outside of my fence leading into the treeline, it's a patch of grass about 20'x20' that I've done a quick scan of once or twice on my way into the woods but only ever found can slaw and other junk.. I put my coil to the earth and after a few sweeps I get a fair mid to high-range tone..probably more can slaw..ugh.. Instead out pops an interesting but mangled object that I still cannot identify.. unk obj1.jpg So I press on..a few more feet later I hit a solid high tone that read in the high 70s/low 80's (can't remember exactly) and i'm thinking it's surely a rosie..nope! its a toasted 1946 wheatie. I'm already doing better than I assumed I would to begin with so I'm feeling pretty good (yep even toasted wheaties excite this amateur:happysmiley:) Not even 5 feet from the wheatie I get a solid tone that's reading in the low 60's at about 4 inches deep...not expecting much I pop the plug and out drops what I immediately recognize as my VERY FIRST flat button!flat button1.jpg and it still has the loop on the back?:headbang: flat button2.jpg
Now my adrenaline is pumping and I continue sweeping the area, I get another hit very similar to the button but it's just a pulltab..oh well I know there has to be more here...another mid/high range reading and another unknown object..(my first thoughts were pocket watch or compact) but after cleaning the dirt off I still can't decide what it is and can't make out enough of the writing on the back to do a practical search..unk obj3.jpgunk obj 4.jpgunk obj2.jpg I'm not getting much else in the area and decide to hit the woods, a few junk targets later I dig this old broken spoon..any ideas to what it's made of or possible age?spoon.jpg I continue on a little further toward an area that was used as a dump site for seemingly quite some time, though most of the cans and other random junk appear to be 30-40yrs old or better..I'm getting some screaming low-high-low hits that I recognize as aluminium cans/can lids and I dig a few of them anyway..and that's just what they are... I decided to move off to one side of the dump site where the ground looks cleaner and a few sweeps later get that sweet high and constant (but faint) tone and I know the AT Pro is telling me there's something good under my coil and it isn't shallow garbage:laughing7: I don't even remember what the VDI was because the audio told me all I needed to know, the depth said 8 inches... I popped the plug out and saw the silver left behind in the hole..at first I thought it was a silver dime and I was plenty happy with that..but after I saw the 18 at the beginning of the date I almost shrieked like a school girl:hello2: 1836fp.jpg it's a shame someone bored a hole through it but I'll enjoy it just the same. I went on to find a couple of old buckles..buckle1.jpgbuckle2.jpg and a few old bullets I would love some opinions on..bullets.jpg Not a bad day in the yard as far as this novice is concerned:occasion18:

I apologize for the (yet again) long-winded post but as you can probably tell..I'm beyond excited:tongue3:

Any additional info you knowledgeable folks can give me on my finds would be greatly appreciated as always.

Now all I have to do is figure out how in the heck i'm going to go about sorting out the history of my new found spot!

HH and thanks for reading,
Chris

Sweet finds! Treasures like that in your own backyard? That's awesome! hh.

Really nice finds! The silver is sweet too even if it is holed. It looks like you have a good range of items from the late 1700s/ early 1800s on. I would guess that the spoon is pewter. HH!

The spoon is pewter.... the silver is awesome..:headbang:. the site you're hunting sounds great..... Great post as well. I like the way you described the hunt as it happened.

That 1836 is amazing !- especially for over here ! King William 1V ? Missed the Queen by a year I think . Hey would
you please put up a pic of the obverse ?

Thank you guys, I assumed it was probably pewter but couldn't be certain. That's why this is such a great community:thumbsup: I've already learned so much in my short time here and can't wait to increase that knowledge 10 fold as well as pass it on to others!

Your first photo might be a boot pistol barrel, and it would b a GR8 find! prolly made by Liege Gunworks, Belgium 1840s-50s...

Holy crap..when I first dug it I thought it may be a pistol barrel for a split second, but that was before I found anything even remotely close to that time period in my yard.
It does look very similar..I wonder if I can find the rest..

Thanks a million for the info BB!

Nice finds! This is a great post, I like the mini-story leading into each piece, made me feel like I was right there. Hopefully someday I will have a good run like that. Thanks, HH___James

I have family in the Portsmouth area in Scioto County. Next time I head down that way I'm definitely packing the detector in the car.
