scale 1.webp

I assume this is some sort of scale, but what for? The beam has saw teeth on top and bottom to keep the weight from sliding. Two sides of the beam have different graduations. one side goes 10 to 50 by fives, but the numbers are 1 1/4 inches apart. The other side is marked 1 to 10 with the numbers 1/18 inches apart. The beam is removable so one can read the side of choice. The markings are like a ruler but different.

scale 2.webp

This item looks like the large knob slides to strike the smaller one and drive the point in.
Can anyone help me out here please?

The top one is a scale. Called a steelyard works like a balance. The bottom one is a slide hammer. Can be designed to work in either direction. Looks like that one is for making holes??

Thanks Tony. I Googled steel yard and saw many similar examples. I'm glad to find this has a name.

Looks to me like a cotton scale or tobacco scale.

The weight on the slide is called a "pea". Like Scout said the small ones were used in the field to weigh cotton and tobacco etc. I rescued one from a cotton gin demo that is 7' long and will weigh 1500 lbs.
