A couple grinding stones that probably shouldn't be posted here.

Here are a few photos of interesting little hammer stones or grinding stones I dug up in the early 1990's in Maryland. The smaller one shows to have been used on both ends. The larger and longer one, I am not sure what to make of it, one end appears to be broken off, and the other end is chipped, but what does remain has been ground flat. Before we get into thinking about what these are/were, I need to tell you that I dug both of these out of separate privy holes in Baltimore, MD, that both dated to the mid to early 19th century. I am thinking they may have been druggists pestles, or probably had some other, industrial or craft function for the city folk in that era?
It is not unheard of to find stray prehistoric artifacts in American privies, because many nice artifacts would have been exposed as block after block of prime ground was cleared and leveled to build row homes. Artifacts would have been picked up by curious folks then as they are now, and could have ended up anywhere once the novelty wore off. I doubt these two are prehistoric, because of the material as well as their context. Just thought I would post a couple examples of white man stone artifacts that are out there to be found.

Its amazing how finds still turn up in your area! Lots to people around but still the ground gives up a few now and again!

Privy hole digging is the best, you know you are going to find something, it's just a matter of getting down to it. Here we find bottles , jugs, pipes and sometimes money, but what ever was their trash ends up being our treasure.
