Got out Jan 3rd to hunt a few field sites ... the weather was cold, windy, and frozen. I had to do a little hacking to get through the first couple inches of frozen ground then it wasn't too bad. The most intersting find of the day appears to be an LC (same size and thickness) that has the center area either drilled or punched out for some reason. My other finds were: a nice 1902 V nickel, several rough wheat cents, a small buckle/d ring, a small button, a small gear?, a key, and a few whats its. It was nice to be out but mighty cold for eastern NC!

That large cent is really odd. Congrats on the v- nickel

Looks like you did ok. They sure messed up that large cent. Something different though.

Nice finds Jim!!! That LC almost looks like someone shot it but the hole is a little ragged to be from a conical bullet or musket ball. Maybe Buckleboy has an idea to share. HH.

Almost looks like they were trying to make a coin ring, but usually the process is started by beating down the edges, then cutting the hole. Who knows, but it does look like someone took some time drilling that coin out. Way cool find!

Jim,
Which one of those Northerners sent down this cold weather? :icon_scratch: :dontknow: :laughing9:
I was surprised too yesterday when my shovel played h-ll getting through those first few frozen inches of tundra. :o
We're just not used to that kind of tough digging here in sunny NC.
Congrats on the finds buddy. Very strange LC. Shotgun wound? :icon_scratch:

Maybe the LC was shot with a bullet?
I think the LC was more than likely drilled ... it is too smooth for the hole to have come from being shot. Since it appears that they removed the head area of the coin, maybe they were in the process of making a coin ring as Curbdigger Carl suggested.
