I found this at an early 1800s house in north Alabama.

Between quarter and half dollar size.? Likely copper. Flat, really now identifying features.

Strange is that it has a reeded edge.? Any ideas?

Interesting find...Its a quarter that had been flattened with a hammer, you can see the roundish indents on it. Looks like a clad not a silver.

For future reference, a coin that has been placed on the RR tracks will be a nice smooth oval, thin on what was the first side that the wheel came in contact with and a bit thicker on the other end. Although totally smooth, most of the time you will still be able to make out the images that were on the coin.

Having grown up living beside a RR, I have quite a bit of experience with these and a nice collection too!

I found somthing similar at a 1790s town site. It was pounded flat and had square holes in it from nails was probably a large cent before it was flattened. All I can say is someone must have a lot of time on thier hands :)
