Stopped by the castle Giechburg on the way home from a business trip for a quick break. The castle was originally built around 1125 on a prehistoric/bronze age settlement, there are a few intact bowls dating 2500 BC on display in the hotel but I miffed the pictures of them, low light. A distant view of the castle driving to it.
A closer view of this beautiful castle and its defensive positions. At least three wars were fought here, this last reconstruction made it impenetrable to the attacking Swedes in the 1600s and this stationary object won the war. Amazing since cannon were well developed by then. There are six turrets and many other defensive positions built into it. The castle is closed for touring so all the turrets and halls and tower were locked until spring.
A small tower within the court yard, a much larger square tower to the left dwarfs this tower.
Inside of the small tower, note the steps were built into the walls and cork screwed around to the top, the steps appear to have been cut off.
<The well.
A look down the deep well, has water in it.
This handsome gargoyle greets you at the bottom of the large tower. Looks like he is puckered up for a kiss, smooch!
Caught this beautiful shot of a monument leaving the castle area. These small stone monuments are all over Bavaria, have one in front of my house as well. They are erected to honor or remember some kind of incident, I don?t have a thorough understanding of them.
Here?s a close up of the monument and a translation. ?This monument was erected to honor holy Trinity 1868?
Here are the finds from a field I hunted for an hour this week, it was very frozen and I was lucky to get out. Found a 14K gold ring and an 1855 silver coin here last week. Had a great week in spite of old man winter, LOL! HH, Mike
