A CAPITAL kind of day! That’s the kind of day I had today. Coins, bling, the usual, and the macabre, the finds were plentiful and the hunting was most enjoyable.
Hello there treasure fiends and friends. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I actually had to work over the weekend, but considering the last big winter storm of the year rolled through the Midwest and my hometown over the weekend, it was just as well that I was at work. And, it was very surprising that I was even able to consider going out metal detecting today. Fortunately, for me, it warmed up enough over the last two days to melt off almost all the snow. Still though, I chose to stick to the woodchips and gravel of a few playgrounds or tot lots. I did decide to broaden my horizons a bit though, by way of venturing a bit farther afield for a change. I routed my search to a couple of towns over from home, the city of Frankfort Kentucky, the State Capital. I’ve hunted this town’s parks and playgrounds and school yards a few times over the past several years and it’s been a while so I figured I might stand a pretty good chance of finding some coins and other goodies. And I did! Cool!
The sun finally came out of the clouds today sometime around noon. I’d been on the road and then busy detecting my first of three parks by then. Now it’s true that the sun was shining, but it was still a bit chilly. Good thing I had my gloves on or my fingers would have been a bit numbed I’m sure. That first park was a little disappointing actually. While I did find a handful of coins, mostly what I found there was pull tabs, scrap and MUD! Yeah, it was sloppy everywhere but in the woodchips, and they were still very soggy. I was climbing back into my truck to move on to the next park on my list when I spotted a coin on the pavement next to my front tire. It turned out to be a Queenie.. a Canadian penny. Poor girl, she had a serious case of “ROAD RASH”. I was wondering if that coin was foreshadowing my treasure hunting for the day. Not to worry though, the next park was a bit more productive.
Park number two for today was a little out of the way, downtown, literally on the banks of the Kentucky River. You would have to climb through a wall of brush and trees, and over a fence, but the river was there. But it wasn’t the river or the river bank that I was there to hunt, it was the playground and it’s woodchips. And they were fruitful indeed. Granted, I found mostly pennies here, LOTS AND LOTS of Pennies! A few other denominations rounded out the hunt nicely though, but one little lump of what I thought was lead, at first, turned out to be a bit macabre. I can only guess that it was, at one time, a zipper pull maybe? Check it out..
The skull was a bit strange to say the least, but the finds didn’t stop there. Of course there were pull tabs, and bits of wire fence and even a wire connector. A few bottle caps, some buttons and snaps, the usual playground suspects found their way into my finds bag before I headed off to the last of three parks on my list for the day.
One of the first things found at the next (last) park was a ring! Bright, shiny, yellow!!!! Plastic! <laughing> There was a dime in the woodchips about two inches farther down than the ring, or I would never have uncovered the ring in the first place. Yeah, it was one of those “OH MAN!” moments.. as in “Oh MAN! I wish it really was gold!” Oh well, it got my pulse racing for a few minutes all the same. A few coin finds later and I found another ring! No, this one was NOT plastic, but it wasn’t much else either.. a junque ring straight out of the gumball machine I’m sure. <laughing> That’s ok, there were coins everywhere, and as if my spirits needed lifting any more than that, one little teddy bear with a handful of balloons brought a smile to my face. I wasn’t going to jump to conclusions when I first picked it up out of the dirt and woodchips, but it did glint in the sunshine. It may well have been gilded at one time or another, but it wasn’t gold, or silver. There is a stone set in its belly, and the balloons had sets in them at one time or another, maybe even the eyes, and there is a stamp on the backside. No, it’s not a 925 stamp..
Anyone have any idea what this is? Whatever it is, it was fun to find, and will make another fine addition to my collection of jewelry finds.
There were a few more finds after that, coins anyway, but the day was pretty much over for my metal detecting at that point. It was time to head for home, I still had errands to run and dinner to make. Still though, it was a good day.. a “Capital” day!, with a pretty good haul of clad to pay for the gas and then some!
I hope all of you get to get out sometime soon . As always..
