Again, you pulled through for me. Thanks.
I did find this on a Google search:
M. C. LILLEY & CO
Columbus Ohio 1865-1882

Re: A BUTTON for nutin'

Yet, again I've stopped short of a complete ID. :-\ What is that on the front of that thing? Lilley made a variety of other items earlier than 1876, but this is when (according to Mark Parker) they went into button manufacturing. Nice find, and (as always) great photos... I honestly know fairly little about buttons, but I was able to piece together "Columbus" because of your photo.

wait, the front is sideways in the photo... those are initials... could be for a railway, I noted they did make railway buttons. GC or CG railway?

Re: A BUTTON for nutin'

There doesn't seem to be any symmetry in the design. That would indicate that it represents something (not just decoration). Where did you find it? Any history?

DOH! NOW I see the letters! :o I think I need new glasses... ::)

Crazy guess, but music related?

Funny, that was my gut reaction. Can't even tell you why now, but the first thing I thought of was a band uniform.

Theres a set of four buttons in a frame with a picture of two guys on eBay.ca. I couldn't find the same picture on ebay.com for some reason.
It's only got another 2 hours of bidding left, but for now it's here:

Ok... "CG" implies to me somesort of Guard... City Guard? Looking at the timefram.. and compare the style to mas produced GAR buttons of the period.. it make sense...

Re: A BUTTON for nutin'

I've seen all the state seal buttons from that time... that's not it. And I don't think militia...

And "M. C. LILLEY & CO" made stuff from buttons to swords (Templar swords) and all kinds of other things... I really think it's an institution button.

Which one is still a mystery....

Could G C stand for Grand Central? Was there a Grand Central Railroad?

If we knew where (what state) it was found, it might help.

Re: A BUTTON for nutin'

There was a Grand Central hotel in Ashville in 1880. It could be from one of their uniforms. (you're in NC, right MM?)

Yes I am. I'm about 4 hours from Ashville.
Looks like I got a tough button to ID?
Thanks for all your help.
