A burned mercury dime and?

Can anyone tell me what this is? I found it in a fuel on my dads farm where a sharecroppers house used to be.

Also threw in a pic of a mercury dime that I found at the same farm where my grandparents house used to be. It burned down before I was born.

It could be from a padlock but something about it is tugging at a long forgotten memory. I keep picturing it on the heater blower or someplace in the cab of our 47 Ford pickup or maybe it was the old Desoto.
