while digging a footer in St. Augustine Florida. just looking for some info. IMG_0054.JPG
 

There is a ring on the pommel and quillion/hanguard which leads me to believe that a chain ran between the two, the grip/handle looks to be engraved. So I wondering if this might be a Freemason or some other organizations sword, more ceremonial than functional.

Definitely middle eastern in design, like USMC officers Mameluke sword.

I could see where that might be a Calvary persons weapon. They might have had some kind of strap or chane attached inb case of dropping they did not have to get off there horse to get it back. It could have looped over the person riding THIS IS JUST A GUESS on MY PART !!! I know when we ride some times we drop things and have get down to get them back.
