Montana City
Actually found some details about this one from a story out of the book, “ More from the quarries of Last Chance Gulch.” Near the original site of Montana City there is a large rock, some say it is made of granite and that a buried treasure either under or near the rock. The treasure according to the old tale is a bucket of gold nuggets and large sapphires that belonged to an Irish Man named Patrick O’Malley. Many heard him tell about his gold and jem stones and figured it was all just talk. He even told those that listened that he wasn’t worried about anyone trying to steal it from him, since the family banshee came with him from Ireland and stood guard over the treasure. Things took a turn when he came to town with large sapphires and gold nuggets! Shortly after this O’Malley was found dead outside his cabin with a bullet hole in his head. No reports ever surfaced that the bucket of treasure was ever found and it should still be somewhere close to old Montana City.
Later I will run across our newspaper article on the story and post it too.
