I found this at an old homesite. It's about 7 inches long and the "ball" part is 1 3/4 inches in diameter. It is hollow but still pretty heavy. It has 2 holes in the middle and 1 hole in the top, that has an inset, as if for a wood screw. The ball shows no wear at all on it.The only wear I can see comes from the 2 holes in the middle, which makes the holes appear almost oval, It weighs about a pound.Note the curvature of the item.No other markings anywhere.

Looks like a brass knob from a horse's hame.

Part of a harness tree. The knob at the end of the tree. ??? A little small though.

You're right, Stoney! In fact, now that I notice the size, I'd say ThreeDawgs may be right on the money with the cane ID.

(Not only that— shhhhhhh!— but the pic I posted actually is a cane top made in imitation of a hame knob. ;D I just happened to know where it was and figured I'd save some time, rather than go digging for a real hame photo.)

Good deal. Thanks everyone. That was quick.A cane top in the form of a horses hame knob, cool. I found this at the same site I found that ceramic wall tube thingy last year. I also found a round piece of metal that says J.B. Williams co. on it,I believe it is a piece of a shaving soap container.I may have found the old homesite! ;)

I'd same hame knob; no cane involved. ;)

And splendid they are, indeed. ;)

In fact, I have a nice blackthorn bata (cane) just a tad too short that would look pretty perky with one of those (not to mention make a serious weapon).

Never know when a little whiskey stick dancing may come in handy.

I think hame as well...the curvature seems a little too extreme to be a cane top...

As an old (Muleskinner) who has put on & taken off
harness many times, & judging by the old patina on the brass,
I would say just a brass knob from a hame, I have one just like this in my storage shed.

Fossis...............
