Was out to a park yesterday, and found this large copper piece that may be a ring or some other type item. Someone put a lot of work into it. It is lined with what looks to be brass, along with three long lines of brass. What they are supposed to represent, is unknown to me. When laid on its' side, it stands at 13/16" high. If it was made as a ring, the person that wore it would have had to have extra long fingers to wear it.

I thought that it might be a napkin holder, but I don't think that it is large enough.

I've attached several photos, and would appreciate any help that you might be able to give me.

Thanks in advance.

Almost looks to me like someone tried to make a patch on a water line...wrapped it with copper and tried to soilder it.

But I don't know anyone that would try such a thing.... ::)

Looks to me like a piece of freehand artwork by a very talented artist . Rounded corners and edges do not look like a botched patch job .

I agree. Looks like it was intentionally made the way it is. Don't know if it is a ring or not but it is a very cool piece. 8)

A homemade neckerchief slide?

That makes the most sense of an idea that has come in yet. If it is, it was probably done as a project by one of the scout dens. Good idea.

Did it come out of the ground this way?

Yeah, it did.  It is a pretty nice piece when you hold it in your hand. I'm sorta leaning to the idea that it is a scout's bandana slide.  I say that, because I have found other scouting pieces in the same general area.

If it came out of the ground in this condition, I have to believe it is a nice piece of jewelry. A kerchief slide would work. Whatever it is, if it was not tarnished about the only thing that does that is gold. I'd have it tested. It may be pink gold with green gold trim. One heck of a find. I would also look very carefully inside for any marks.

Now you've got my curiosity up.  Went and looked at the piece real close, and their is a mark on the inside, but it is worn pretty much, but it appears to be a large letter U or W.  Can't tell for sure.  As for being gold, I don't know.  It is a pretty heavy piece.  I just figured that it was a bronze gilt that was used on the copper background.  Will have to go have someone check it for me.

My bet is that is the maker's mark and it is solid gold. Just can't come out of the ground that nice and not be.

Anybody else want to chime in on the condition it came out of the ground in and offer any other suggestions on metal that will be that clean?

Don't get your hopes up. I've been welding and repairing pipe for over a decade now. That is definately just a piece of copper with some grade 4 or grade 5 brazing rod on it. You can see marks from the flux quite clearly.

Chances are it is a relatively newer creation.

I totally agree with Allen as to what it looks like. But I have never seen a piece of copper come out of the ground like this. Now if it had been cleaned up, that's a different story. So I am still miffed as to how it can stay this way in the ground.

I've dug my share of cut off pieces of copper pipe and to look the way it does is a real mystery to me.

I agree but if it was recently lost, it would be on top of or just pushed into the soil. Maybe we can find out more about how where it was when it was found. If it was 6" deep, it means something different than if it was on top or maybe in the chips.

When this item was found, it was at a depth of about 2 inches. It was NOT on top of the ground. I don't believe that it is just somebody's playing with a torch. I also don't believe that it is gold. I think that it was made for a scout bandana slide, and the 3 little arms that go up on it, were put there for looks. It makes it look better than no decoration at all.

Since it was only about 2 inches deep, it probably hadn't been there too long, but who knows?
