A Brass piece with hand inscribed portrait, perhaps mocking King George?

One of my friends found this in one of the oldest areas of southern NJ yesterday and it looks like the brass hardware was hand inscribed with a bust of someone before holes were drilled. The way they depicted the individual is not in the best of light, so perhaps as my title suggests, it was a colonial era piece that someone expressed their "love" for KG? Thoughts?

first thought is gun furniture. I think it is likely to be a later repair job.

I've noticed some of these older things have two holes in them. I think this is where you would put a string or chain to where.

The finder thinks you might be correct since the piece is convex. Now to trim the guy's nose hairs and eyelashes! :)
