A Black Friday Indeed!!!!!! 11-28-2008

Visiting my parents for the Thanksgiving and since I had Friday off, I took a about a 120 mile (round trip) road trip to a bunch of the small towns near them.

Ended up visiting a total of 24 Banks in my 5 to 6 hour trip.

picked up a $1000 bag of dimes, a $200 bag of nickels, and a $50 bag of pennies. The half dollar bag was empty...shipped out last week.....not a good start as this bank has always been good for a few silver in the bag..

picked up 2 - $50 bags of pennies. Again $0 in halves....bad signs continuing.

$7.50 in loose halves skunked....can't buy the bag as the right person is not in...

$55 in the coin machine and the bag fills at $100, but I don't have $45 in halves to fill it yet. Consider stopping back on the way home if its still open. ...somebody recently had picked up all the loose halves they had (other than the coin bag) and they had been sitting awhile...I start thinking...Am I too late? Did someone make this run recently?

$37 in loose halves in the tellers tray with 6 silver showing.... finally a break through. Also turns out this branch rolls coins for other banks and had like 20 or 30 bags of pennies in the back so I bought 2 more $50 bags of pennies as well. Turns out they were all 40%, but that was fine with me.

I decided to cash in all my reject halves for the trip and buy back the half dollar bag if it was close to full before I started. Well, they started running the halves and almost immediately it stopped (maybe $100 in or so)....The one teller starts asking me if I had been there before (which I hadn't).... Well apparently someone else had been there asking for all the halves in the place apparently somewhat recently. After some discussion they decided I could buy the bag which apparently although he had cleaned out all half dollars in the bank, he had not touched the half dollar bag....whew!!!! So I buy the bag back for $1000. I had heard what I thought was the sound of silver in the back room when they set the bag down, so I was pretty sure there was something in it. Although the light was starting to get dim at this point, I reached in and grabbed a handful. In that handful, I had 3 - 40% Kennedys....looks like a fun bag....decided to wait until I got back to my parents house and see if my son wanted to search with me.

On the way home, I swung back to bank #7 and picked up the $55 in the coin bag since it was still open (had 10 minutes to spare...lol)
I stuck my hand in the bag in the car and pulled out a walker and franklin....decided to let my son help me with that bag too.


So I get home and since we were going out for dinner as a family shortly I asked my son to help me sort through the $100 bag as I knew it wouldn't take very long. Turned out to be a good bag...16 silver halves.

So at this point I was pretty happy with my trip as I had found 97 silver halves and 1 silver dime and I knew I had a $1000 bag left to search that produced 3 - 40% in the first handful.


After dinner, my son goes straight to the bag of half dollars and asks if we can sort it now....*twist my arm*....lol My daughter decides she wants to help out too.

So I get all set up on my parents kitchen table and dump out some (a few handfuls worth in front of each of them). They immediately start picking out silver one after the next....by the end of that first little bunch they had a few franklins, a number of 64's and some 40% Kennedys. I was thinking...could it be? Could this really be that good throughout??

Well my daughter got bored after the first bunch (no surprise...). My son however was totally into it as there was a lot to find.

So I dump out the next bunch for each of us...well let me tell you as I dumped out each bunch.. the bag seemed to get better and better...Franklins and walkers coming out by the dozens with each batch dumped out (maybe $50 worth in a batch).... and then about halfway through the bag.....I spotted it.....MY FIRST BARBER!!!!!! 1899 worn, but readable.

It continued like this for the remainder of the bag....my dad even stopped by and was checking things out a bit...

And then in the last bunch (which of course I let my son do)....he pulls his first BARBER!!!! a 1907-D.

5 - $50 bags of pennies

Oh and I tried to take a picture, but with some many I had to stand back too far to make a really nice pic....
