950 Silver with 14k accent- no clue on the style

I went to the TS on half off day against my better judgement and scored well. I got these earrings for $8. They are marked 950 and 585. They are clip ons and the like they were casted in a mold from looking at the back. They are about 1 inch by 1 inch and weigh about 25 grams. They feel like old Mexican earrings, but no taxco, Eagle mark or makers mark. Anyone have any thoughts?

I think that's usually marked inside a pentagon shaped stamp or accompanied with a PT or Plat. mark.

The earrings have a mid century modern look to them, probably date to the 50's. Casting jewelry is not unusual and is a pretty common practice I believe. Clip ons were very popular from the early 1930's to the 1970's when piercing again gained popularity. I can see why you may have expected them to be Mexican. They do have that look about them.

I am blown away that I passed on these earrings at $16 2 weeks ago because I thought they looked fake and weren't signed with a makers mark. I thought I saw the 585 mark then, but the light is bad in this TS. I am very lucky to grab these. Any 14k even if it is .5 gram earrings get listed at $29 and up. HH

Not necessarily, bad choice of words on my part. Vintage modernist maybe? Mid century modern is more of a term used to describe furniture or architectural design styles. I really don't know what keyword to use for the actual shape of them though.

Thank you. You should search sterling jewelry mid century modern sold listings on ebay. Stuff sells much higher, but I will not risk it with the Ebay mods. HH

They generally do try to make it more obvious, but I once found a platinum/18k ring marked "950 18K". 12.5 grams each is also on the hefty side. Had them tested?

Wouldn't I have to hit them with a file mark to test them for platinum?

I bought a bracelet recently marked 950. I was at the jeweler anyway, and had them look at it. She told me it was for sure not gold, and it didn't feel like silver. I did an acid test when I got home ... silver. I believe if it says .950 it is silver. I've seen several pieces marked 950 that are silver and not platinum.

That is what the jeweler told me.

I would test them. If the gold label is 585 instead of 14K there is a good chance the 950 mark is a platinum mark. They could be white gold with platinum accent (the raised area). I hope they are gold and platinum. If just silver still over $13 in scrap so good buy.

Sold for $70 shipped. I didn't get it tested, but 875% ROI is good enough. HH
