So, some backstory. My grandfather has a lot of 8 mm reels. He recorded every reel we have, except for two. They are all home movies, except for two.

I was going through the reels on the old 8mm player, when I made a discovery.

When I saw this picture, I thought to myself, “Is that the Edmund Fitzgerald?“

On closer inspection, I discovered I was wrong.

It is footage of the Arthur M Anderson.

Fun fact, the Arthur M Anderson was the last ship to be in contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald before it sank. It was also the first ship to go and look for the Edmund Fitzgerald after its disappearance, according to Wikipedia.

This footage, however, was labeled on the reel case as 1969. It pre-dates when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank.

I thought it was very interesting, and I wanted to share it.

Let me know what you think.

Regards,

Jared

Well I think that's awsome....they look alike !!

I've been right next to the old girl ..... as a mariner/fisherman most my life, that's powerful poetry in music !! I felt spooked playing it while sailing by the wreck !!

Sorry, I thought the picture you posted was of the Anderson, not the Fitzgerald. My mistake.

Anyway, I’m reviewing another reel as we speak, and I think the Edmund Fitzgerald does make a cameo. I’m still analyzing it.

This is on a different reel. I’m not certain, but I think this is the Edmund Fitzgerald. The color of the smokestack and the stern is a match.

That is a great find...a tenant in my previous building went book shopping and picked up an old book written by a Japanese professor from Hiroshima or Nagasaki...I can't remember...when the tenant got home he noticed an inscription on the inside dated the day before the bomb was dropped...he had sent the book to a friend in the United States...your story reminded me alittle of the found book...
