I was checking an area about 40 yards off of the number 1 fairway of a golf course I have permission to search. In an area of about 30 yards by 30 yards I found 85 wheat pennies in about 2 1/2 hours. Some of the pennies were two and three to a hole, and averaged about 3 inches deep. Most of them were between 1941 and 1951, but a good number from the teens, 20's and 30's. There was not one silver coin in the area. The golf course dates to the 1930's. The only thing I can deduce is that the area where the pennies were found is where the golf course drains after heavy rains; it is a low spot. Over the years the coins were deposited there. Going back to check for silver; got to be there.

nice find do you know if there was a pond there at one time if so it could have been a wishing pond back then

Pays to eat your wheaties for the those 85 knee bends wtg

I suspect kids dropped those wheaties long ago...maybe from a piggybank or something. Very strange to find that many wheats in an area without 1 silver showing.

I'd go back for sure just to see what you left in the ground.

Good luck!

Wow. Until the Iceberg came along, I had never seen, and have still never seen until now anything else remotely comparable to the great wheat penny abundance. Isn't it frustrating not finding a silver with all those wheats...well I'd also be surprised if none turned up there...congrats on the site and good luck!

Go for it... Nice little haul...

Thats awesome, I just started and I'm wandering where i would be able to find cases like those for my wheat pennies, any help??

I had a yard that produced wheaties like that...after most were cleaned out the silver started showing up. good luck!

If these were random drops that accumulated over time, you would expect approximately one silver coin for every five wheat pennies. This is based on ratios that folks typically dig at turf parks. Statistically speaking, there is no chance that you found 85 wheats that were random drops and found their way to this one spot. I suspect you've got a cache or spill that was scattered in the area you searched. Great find! Could be a penny piggy bank spill, as one poster suggested.

Call Guinness I think this should go in the book of records.

Wow! That's a bunch of wheats! Try doing a bit of research and maybe you can come across some old photos or info on the place? Strange no silver. :icon_scratch: One of the neat things about hunting...trying to figure out how and who and why. :D

Welcome to Tnet~

OLD GOLF COURSES ARE A GOOD PLACE TO DETECT. CONGRATS.

Nice job on the wheats! I can't believe a silver didn't show up in all of those wheats. You wonder how they all ended up in the same area. Definately worth hitting some more. Happy hunting.
