I need some help and advice. Found this today. Came up as a solid copper signal on my Prism IV. IS DEFINITELY A COIN. Is relatively round but has tiny globs of loose metal around outside edge. So I'm thinking very old.(not well struck or poorly struck) Cleaned off with toothbrush and h2o but is still very cruddy. I WILL NOT SCRUB! You can see tiny bits of detail starting to come out but still can't ID. Outside rim is black and tiny globs of metal on the edge are shiney so I'm thinking silver or possibly pewter. It is a thin planchet and slightly larger than a quarter. The green patina tells me copper but the blackness of the rim and globs of metal around the edge tell me otherwise. HMMMM. I want to find out what this is but don't want to rush or ruin it. The weight is, or would seem to be lighter, if it was made of copper for this size disc.(I don't have a scale to weigh it in grams) So this is my delema. I need some good advise. Went on the cleaning coins site but decided to seek help here before I do ANYTHING. Don't really wanna use heated peroxide as I do on copper because I don't know whether or not it would be safe to use on silver or pewter. HELP Todd :-\

Hey Todd

That could be a really great coin so I agree about you taking your time in determining your next steps with it.

there are some individuals here who can give pretty sound advice so between them and your coin cleaning site you might have a prospect of identifying your coin.

thanks for sharing with us and be sure to let us know what you determine

Hi start out by recording Measurements ect. & take it too the post office
and get them too weigh it too just give you a idea.

Then proceed with a bath in Hydrogen peroxide, nuke the peroxide for
15 seconds then drop in the item, just make shure your useing a Pyrex
measureing cup since its microwaveable safe. When it quits bubbleing
reheat the mixture in the microwave again just like you did before,
use a soft bristle tooth brush for scrubbing.
