Trying to date this 8" Meriden spoon I fished out of the lake today.

If I squint real hard and cross my eyes the mark looks like 'Meriden Brita Co A1'

Maybe it was silver plated. The spoon has no interest in my magnet. There appears to be copper like color throughout the handle. A little Tarn X = big rotten egg smell.

Your spoon is an 1847 Rogers Brothers fiddleback silverplate pattern known as “Threaded”. In 1862 Meriden Britannia bought out the Rogers business, including its patterns and dies, and in 1866 merged it into Meriden. So, I would say it dates between 1866 and 1898, after which Meriden became part of the International Silver Company. They did use this same pattern on Sterling silver (c.1879) but the ‘A1’ mark is for silverplate.

Excellent assessment. Thank-you for taking a moment to share your opinion - it's very much appreciated.
