James (aka NJ Large Cent) and I had an 8-hour dig (yesterday) in Southwest New Jersey and found a ton of stuff! Mostly junk or unidentified pieces of metal, but overall a great and exhausting day. 98 degrees (temperature, not the awesome boy band) and 6 acres of land that was formerly the spot of an iron works company and revolutionary-era battles. We'll clean up everything and try to get a better look, and I'm sure we'll post a few items to the What Is It forum. James ended the day with a few Indian Head pennies, a coin TBD, a pretty cool decorative pad lock, and axe head, and some other goodies. My first dig, when I wasn't discriminating out iron, resulted in the belt buckle (pic below). I have to do some research to see if I can identify it. That early dig had me on zero discrim, which had me digging a LOT... it got to a point where I had to discrim out the lowest iron hits (James discrimmed out anything less than 30 on his AT Pro). The land is there for us to hunt whenever we want, so they're not missed opportunities... we only touched the surface. I also walked away with some clad coins and an old beer bottle that gave me a good mid-tone.

On another note, I hemmed and hawed over which detector I was going to use -- my new Fisher CZ-21 or my Garrett Ace 350. I went with the Ace 350 and it rocked. It detected the tiniest piece of metal over 10 inches deep. Real solid machine.

Going to clean stuff up today and post more pics. Happy hunting this weekend!

Welcome & Good luck

Linchpin, eh? Thanks... that's helpful!

D'oh! I was hoping to clean up the Rolling Rock beer bottle as it was in great shape, and it slipped out of my hand and I DROPPED IT! It shattered :(

Sorry I tried to post a pic but it won't go through.

Sorry its my first time posting from my phone. That sounds like a really great site. With a history like that I'm sure you will make many great Finds. Good luck and happy digging.

Thanks to both of you for the help with the ID. There were so many things we couldn't identify, and will be cleaning them off and trying to figure it out. Some pretty cool iron spikes that collected some really hard mud that upon first revelation, we didn't know what they were.

never dirt hunted with my CZ21 - but in all metal I get pierced earing backs
if you want to find small stuff - thing will find BB's
I hunt in all metal in water - and click to zero to check in ID mode
try to dig it all

CASPER-2, the CZ-21 works like a champ in my backyard. Very accurate and goes deep. I find it much easier to pinpoint than my Ace 350, but admittedly, I probably need to get more intimate with the DD coil. I did want to take the CZ-21 out briefly, but where we parked, the ground was orange due to all the iron rust, so ground balancing was impossible. It sounded like a malfunctioning robot right before explosion.
