Got any pictures? Sounds strange. Realde Tayopa is the most knowledgeable about firearms on this forum, at least in my opinion.

It doesn't read 7. anything.

Military cartridges read.... left to right, top to bottom.... don't turn the casing.

Your Cartridge is a 7.62 x 51 NATO.  Commonly know as a .308 and was made in 1969 at the Lake City arsenal.

And to answer your exact question: The M-14 fires this round, as well as the M-60, M-21, M-24, M-25, M-240G, and M-40. I think that's all of them. Other countries also shoot this round in some of their rifles, as it is a NATO round.

Thanks for the help.

Was found at fort hancock nj
The fort served as a coastal and air defense installation
from 1895 to 1974.

I toted an M60 many miles. It is a helluva weapon and the 7.62 (308) is a much better round than the 5.56 (.223) in wide use today. Ron

Well... I am a bit unique in this aspect.

I beleive that EVERY round has its' niche.

I wouldn't use a fifty cal to shoot pigeons here in town, in my back yard... oh, but that would be COOL!!!  Sorry... got sidetracked for a sec... By the same token, my Remington pelet rifle does really well to get rid of the air rats.

I like both the .308 and the .223 for there respective uses.  A .223 is a heck of a varmiter, and a .308 is a heck of a mid-size game round.  Neither was designed to kill a man, but both will do it effectively with the proper load.

A FMJ .308 will stop a man much better than a FMJ .223, but a 55 grain Ballistic Tip .223 at 3150 FPS will flat explode a head at 300 yards.  A FMJ .308 is far superior at 800 yards, but it all boils down to one thing....  The right round and load for the right job.  The .308 is a jungle buster, and the .223 is a casulity causer.  How many guys does it take to take care of one dead guy?  ZERO.  How many guys does it take to carry the guy screaming his head off because he just got stitched with a .223?  At least TWO.  One wound, three men down.

Get the idea?

What would I want in the combat of today?  A .223 with ballistic tips.  Good for room clearing and still good at 300 yards.  A ballistic tip will EXPLODE* inside a body at short ranges and high velocity... very, very, very effective for clearing a room.  Very low recoil for all day shootability.  Light weight so I can carry more explosives and grenades, as well as carry MORE extra ammo.  What would I use a .308 for... think M-40.  A back-up weapon for a M-82.

* Not litterally EXPLODE... it fragments into hundreds of little pieces... instantly.

I certainly did not mean to get into a war of words with you DigEmAll. My reference to "my" preference of the .308 over the .223 was referring to their use as military rounds not as hunting rifles. I was told in the military how many more people it takes to look after a wounded man than a dead one, but when they are shooting at you believe me you want him dead!!!! I own, reload, and shoot many rifles today including the .221 Fireball, .222, .223, .243, .250-3000, .257 Roberts, .270, .280, 7mm-08, 7-30 Waters, 7X57, 7.65X53 Argentine,
.300 Rem Mag, .338, as well as .44 Mag for rifle and pistol. I also load for and shoot several pistols in various calibers. I have many preferences for targets, varmints, and large game, but God forbid I ever have to shoot at another human being again.....but if I do please give him a .223 and me a .308. Ron

Sorry guys.... Jose and Ron.

I was up for about 30 hours when I posted that and didn't mean to chafe anyone.

Jose... that was a US NATO head stamp and the US never had a 7.69 or 7.63 round. LOL No harm, no foul!
;D ;D ;D

Ron... I though I was the only person in the world to own a 7mm-08 or a 7-30 Waters!!!! Although I no longer have my Waters... The 7mm-08 is HIGHLY underrated in my opinion! Like a mini .30-06! That is a GREAT round and is eclipsed by only one other round as my "If you can only have one rifle..." choice of rifles. I could go on and on about all the merits of the 7-08. Barrel life, throat erosion, case taper.... etc. etc. but will save you the re-run... sounds like you know weapons as well as I do! LOL

My first pick is the .260 Remington. Fast, flat, and a happy medium size. Can be loaded bigger for large mulies, loaded faster for jacks and coyotes. Just a nearly perfect all-purpose round! It's like a 25-06 with a little bigger bullet. Now there is another great round....and the .357. and .270 and 7mm... hell, anything fast, flat, and medium! But as the Chinese would say... the .260 is a happy round. A ying and a yang.

Hi DigEmAll,
You didn't chafe me in the least, but I thank you for writing. I have always been a shooter and my wish for my last day here will be that I go shooting in the morning and find a hoard of silver and gold in the afternoon, and tell my wife, kids, and grandchildren how much I love them in the evening. Then take me away. Good hunting to all.

Well, I have a 7X30 Waters in a Contender handgun. Bought it for sillouette shooting. Although I 've never shot it in a match it will tumble those 200 meter rams all day long! Wouldn't hesitate to use it on a Whitetail deer either if the opportunity presented itself. Monty

hey diggum, did you forget that the military has to use ball ammo in their small arms per the geneva convention, or were you wishing to use the ballistic tips?........LOL.........grat info by the way

Digem, my favorite hunting rifle is a Swedeish Mauser in 6.5 SE. Almost identical ballistics as the 260 Rem. Has been around for over a hundred years. Funny how nothing is really new anymore in shooting sports....well except maybe the short magnums? Monty
