75 Year Old Cancer Patient Shoots and Kills 1 of 4 Home Invaders, Other 3 Captured
NOVEMBER 15*2013
BY*DAN CANNON
Charles Carlson, a 75 year old cancer patient, lives along in his rural home about 90 miles north Minneapolis. His nearest neighbors are some distance away.
Those facts make what happened early yesterday morning even more terrifying.
Four suspects broke into Carlson’s home with the intent to steal the painkillers that he takes to deal with the pain associated with his cancer.
Carlson struggled with one of the suspects, and managed to grab his own gun, at which point he fired one shot, hitting, and killing one of the suspects, identified as 23-year-old Gypsy Watts.
According to the*Grand Forks Herald, Watts was responsible for a series of convenience store robberies when he was 19. He spent a year in jail for those crimes.
The other three suspects immediately fled, but were captured by police a short time later.
According to reports, all of the suspects, despite being in their early 20′s, have lengthy criminal records.
Based on all accounts, the homeowner should not face any charges in the incident. Minnesota does have a Castle Doctrine law on the books.
This is yet another example of how guns can level the playing field. How could a 75 year old cancer patient ever expect to beat 4 convicted criminals without a deadly weapon?
