7 3/4 more from the "Button Field"

Well, I returned once again to the button field and found 8 more buttons, seven of which are intact. I have now found 20 buttons in the small area of the field that I have been working. Oddly enough, it has only produced one coin so far, the 1809 Half Cent I found a week ago. Various backmarks but the only one I can make out is YOUNG SMITH & CO which was in business 1830-1858. The only others I can read have generic backmarks like PLATED or GILT. The broken button would have been my best if it was intact. It has an eagle a wreath and writing along a banner that I cannot make out. The one with the rays is unusual as well. The nicest one is the one I am holding in the photo. It is the heaviest button I have ever found. It had a high VDI like a coin. It has a crown on top, stars on the sides and the word "GILT" below. Where are the coins???

The bottom photo has two "Whatizits". I think the bottom is a part of a flintlock from a musket. The other object is just like ones I have found before thinking they were trash, but now i realize they are not. I remember seeing one in a post a while back...some type of grooming pick? Help me out here!

One more Whatizit from last weeks hunt. I almost threw it out, but it seems to be a figure of a woman?

Check your trash before tossing it!

Image 19 (bottom piece) is part of a buckle.

The piece in your hand looks like furniture decor

Hey Neil ...

Nice buttons bud

I guess back then they did'nt sew well :icon_scratch: :dontknow:

I have a colonial home site of a guy that fought in the battle of Oriskany and the home would have been fairly big considering the pattern of finds .
Only found about 5 coins , King Geo's and a few Lg Cents but so far close to 100 buttons and about 6 buckles...I know this guy was just a farmer called up in the Militia and barely had two pennys to rub together but there are so many buttons !!

I re-hunted last week and found about 20 more buttons and no coins so guess I'm saying dont be to surprised there isnt much money.
I believe back then people were more carefull with earnings :sad11:

One funny / strange find though was the handle part of a fancy pewter spoon with a detailed eagle and olive leaf pattern /w stars...seemed like it would have come from a rather expensive set of utensils !

Good thing about digging those buttons ...you never know what its going to be ! Sure was'nt expecting the GW inaugural when I dug it

HH ! & Good Luck :icon_thumleft: :icon_salut: :icon_thumright:
