I'm hoping to have found the oldest penny I've found. I never came across a penny this green colored. It's definitely a wheat but I can't see a date. Anyone have any ideas to clean it a bit more to maybe get a date?

Thanks for looking...

Hmm, that's a very toasted penny. For copper, I use olive oil or hydrogen peroxide, but I don't think that'll help you much.

Electrolysis is your best bet. I've found dozens that bad and you can easily read the dates on all of them afterwards.

That Wheat's in pretty rough shape.

I use a lot of different methods to clean old coins, Andres Pencils - Electrolysis - Peroxide - Olive Oil, etc.
With a lot of the encrusted Wheat Cents I've found I can usually read the date by rubbing with Extra Fine Steel Wool.
You can pick up a pack for around $4.00 at any Hardware or Home Supply store.
I usually get about two years out of bag of the six steel wool pads.

Good Luck !

Since I only want to see if I can get a date I decided on white vinegar. It's going slow but I have been able to get most of the crust off the back. The front side was crustier so no date yet if ever. Of course, this has turned the copper orange, but I can live with that.

I'll give the steel wool a try, thanks.

I use worchestershire sauce and can usually get the date in a few hours.

Vinegar (and worchestershire sauce) dissolve copper. Electrolysis only removes the crud, but it's your coin, have fun.

Soaked it twice for 8 hours in vinegar. The crust is off. I've decided it's too pitted to get a date though.

...and all this time I've just been using it on my steaks :occasion14:
