The wife and I went to our permission site after a hard 10 minute rain the night before. Lots of newly exposed artifact compared to my last trip there a few days before. Mostly flakes, but also a handful of tools, hand held hammers and grinders I’m calling them, unsure exactly what they are. These rocks are not native to this area which is entirely fine reddish sand except for caliche brought in for the oilfield lease roads. The most interesting one is far upper left corner, a somewhat conical stone made of quartzite I think.

Thanks Tdog, yes I think it is a core as well and it is quartz. Turns out brown is stuck on sand that we couldn’t get off with a thumbnail brush and water. The wife found the core and I found the flake right after within 30’. Likely the same piece of of rock as these are the first pieces of quartz we have found there.

I would have guessed an ichnofossil instead of pestle. It is the smallest I have ever seen. Nice hunt !

Well I went back and looked at scale after you said that. I thought it was much bigger. I think you right.

I should have given the measurements: 2-3/4” long with a cross section of the base of 1-3/8” x 2-1/16” at its widest points.

Okay, I did some research on ichnofossils. Could mine be a coprolite (fossilized feces), or something else? Is it the small size or shape that would indicate an ichnofossil or something else? Thanks!
