Maybe I wrote about this a year or so ago, but just found a cool photo and including it here. My most gratifying find based on hard nosed research paying off was six silver coins in a very small area (maybe 20 ft square or so) under the site of an old roller coaster in Poughkeepsie, NY. The coaster and park are totally gone and now the site of a college and the land has been changed, but I found an old postcard of the park showing the coaster and woods in the background and I realized from walking the site that the woods are still there behind an old stone wall where I saw rusted support wiring from the coaster. Figured people were in the woods and stuff may have flown from pockets off the coaster. Had no luck in most of the woods and suddenly hit six silvers in a very small area of land (first Barber half at that time, a couple of Washington quarters, and three Mercs as best I can remember). The Barber was a thrill for sure. Found one other since that time, but nothing like the first to hold that monster piece of silver in your hand. Here's a "new" photo of the coaster I just found. The only undeveloped area of woods now is to the far left of the coaster on the far left of the picture at the lower third of the picture.

In terms of the roller coaster, the Blue Streak, it was the fastest coaster in the world at 65.2 miles per hour between 1928 and 1941 when the park closed, but that record was not broken until1981 (Great America, American Eagle). It was also the tallest (127 ft) and had longest drop (140 ft) until those records were broken in 1977 (King's Island, The Beast). (Note: I feel this is hunted out, or I would not give all the details, but if you decide to go to this site, be aware of campus security. Some are nice, others not so nice. If you send me a message I will direct you on the best place to park and go in the woods, but I really don't think it's a good site any longer. I went back several times -- found some wheaties, old spoon, etc.)

Thats pretty nifty Bergie. I know there was tons and tons of those old parks in NY... Most not as big as that one, but they had all those trolley parks back in the 30s. I've read quite a bit about them online, and always thought they would be a great place to MD.
Thanks for sharing!

I went to a trolly park last year on private land with "NO TRESPASS" signs everywhere, but it's now a mining operation and the guys were great and let me in to detect but mentioned others had been there over the years. I had photos and everything and was right on the site and you could see foundations and that it was original land, but it must have been totally hunted out. I went several times and only thing of note was a large ring that you would toss over a bottle to get a prize or perhaps it's a bracelet, hard to tell, but not a single coin. Was bummed!
