I found this octagon musket barrel .It measures 19 inches long and the last three inches are a normal cylinder shape. The bore measures .565 and seems to have no rifling. Does anyone know what kind of rifle this may of came off? Is there a difference from flintlock rifle barrels and percussion rifle barrels. How old is it? Any ideas? Thanks

19 inches is pretty short for a musket barrel. Is it octagon (8) or hexagon (6) sided? Any evidence of a flash hole near the breach or a sight near the muzzle? If not, it may be a table leg.

The end is bent a little so it may have been broken off and yes there is a small hole on the left side. I'll take. I'll take some better pics.

looks like part of the tang is still at the breech end? If the flash hole is definitely on the side, and not toward the top it'll be flintlock. There are a lot of muskets that had that style barrel...It'll be pretty hard to ID it definitely, but still a really cool find

Here is some better pics. Yes the tang is still there. The hole is on the left side and there is to screw ls on the bottom where it fastened to the stock. There's also a rectangular cutout mid way down the barrel.

The flash hole is actually on the right hand side, that's a hook type tang, the rectangle, if it's on the top is for a sight, if it's on the bottom it's for a wedge lug.... I'll check around and see what I can find with a barrel that mounts like that

My guess is it is a cut down barrel from a 28 gauge fowling piece.

19" long is too short for most muzzle loaders.

Certainly not a musket, very few were octagon to round and none had a hooked breech. Most likely a cut down fowling piece as toothpick stated.
