This is a nickel plated brass canister 1 3/8 dia. and about 2 1/2 " tall. Marked Norvell Shapleige Hardware St Louis.
Also Norleigh Diamond edge with insignia. Question is, what was in it? Any ideas?

Until someone pipes in - I searched Google and found that Augustus Shapleigh took his retirement in 1900 and the company reorganized in 1901. Another name change occurred. The new name was Norvell-Shapleigh Hardware Company. Saunders Norvell was its president for the next ten years. he was an extremely astute businessman, salesman and knowledgeable hardware man, etc. - more can be found (history, etc.) via the attached PDF file.

I probably can't post the e-baY link below but it is to a 1910 Advertisement for Norleigh-Diamond lanterns and searchlights. They also made blowtorches and later flashllights. I'm guessing yours may be a piece off one.
