At my home you can't go 2 swings without hitting an old can. There's a lot of ketchup bottles and this Vicks bottle I thought was pretty cool. Are there any items from this era to oooooo&ahhhh The dumps go 4'+ deep.
old beer cans are probably worth more than the bottles in 50s dumps (yes..brown rusty cans)- there is a message board dealing with that (www.therustybunch.com) - check it out - there is a way to soak them...using oxalic acid....takes the rust off...not the paint....works on lic plates and toys...other tins....they can explain it better over there....old cans paid for my last vehicle.......
Welcome to TNet. I'd say yes, especially if you like sodas & milks, and perhaps cans. There's also the possibility that you may dig down into some older stuff...
I'll try hunting for the beer cans,a lot of them are just cylinders of rust with to holes where they stabbed there knifes in both sides. I'll post when I get some cans and clean em up, thanks for the posts
i pulled out about 100 oil cans all worth $10 apiece(esso aviation oil) all in decent shape, and a dodge plymouth 1930s double sided porce dealership sign worth $3500 all day, (the pic is on one of my posts from last year check it out) all from a 1950s. 60s dump......it def is worth it!
The nice thing about those dumps is that there are usually going to be things that are much older in them, maybe someone cleaned out grandmas house back in the 50's and dumped some good stuff.....
If I were on to a 50s-60s dump site, I would put my detector aside and use my sifter, and I'd be focusing in on tokens. I have 6 "gypsy" dumps that I frequent with my sifter and have found ALOT of silver dimes and tokens, as well as nice marbles and other weird and cool stuff that you just can't find with a detector. One of my buddies, the one that showed me these dumps I go to has found HUNDREDS of tokens, one day I showed up too late... he had found THREE coin clumps each about the size of a cantalope all made up of tokens, saloon tokens, grocery tokens, tax tokens, and a few brothel tokens! Had I shown up a half hour sooner... I may have gotten at least one clump! lol!
I have sold quite a few painted label soda bottles found in dumps from the 50's -60's. Also local milk and cream bottles with embossing can sell pretty good. One of my coolest finds was found next to a tree between a dump and the stream it was close to. An 1890's Pett's Bald Eagle whiskey bottle from Boston, nice amethyst color with bubbles. The only defect being a BB hole on the back near the bottom, killed the value but displays nicely. If you look hard enough your bound to find something cool and maybe even some sale value. I'm just chompin at the bit waiting for the last snow to melt and ground to thaw as I found 2 new dumps after freeze up, even eyeballed an old ring on the surface. Happy diggin!
those cans will clean up (oddly enough ..sometimes the rustier ones turn out better) - post that picture on the can message board...those guys will tell you exactly which cans are good...how much....
you can find oxalic acid at certain hardware stores....sometimes as "wood bleach ".....of as part of 'deck wash' - though..you want to get the powder form...the liquid was other stuff in it sometimes - those can guys can probably hook you up - I would fill a bucket to can depth.....hot water...add a couple/few ozs of powder......do it outside....its a little toxic...not bad.....but...you don't want to stick your head over the bucket and sniff the fumes when its hot -gloves are good too....any acid will dry your hands out - put the rustier things in - this could also include old lic plates - tin toys -any sort of can/tin you find.....even cleans crap out of bottles....(though don't put painted sodas/milks in there) -try it out...its a lot of fun to see how great things turn out....especially "mystery cans" - things that are unreadable until soaking....
Yeah I would dig to , milk bottles are cool to find as well which there were a lot of different milk companys around during that time . Plus the soda bottles as well. I like the comment about the oil cans mattysee made I might have to look into that one I know of a lot of old bottle dumps around prince william county ,if anyone is into that sort of thing give me a shout!
