50's bumper?

Dug this out of a 50's dump (my backyard) it looks similar to bumpers I've seen on older cars. I know nothing about 50's cars. Just curious what it went to

When I was 16 my Model A had mechanical brakes, and there was never more than one that worked at any given time, couple that with being a 16 year old idiot, that drove to fast for those brakes to work well. Managed to not be able to stop in time and knocked one of those off a rear bumper. Did not hurt my car, but I had to find them another and fix the bumper, or they were going to tell my Dad, and that was something that we didn't want to do. Cops was one thing, but Dad was something else. That would have been in 1954, and the car I hit was probably from the 40's, but I don't remember what brand or model at this late date.

I think those are called bumper guards.
