I went to a local cornfield where I have found some civil war relics yesterday. I was about 70 yards off the road and my ace 250 started jumping around. I have found lots of coal in the area so I eliminated that notch. But it was still going crazy. I put my shovel down and hit something hard. I need up digging a metal plate that is roughly 20" long, 7" wide and 1 1/4" thick but it weighs 55.4 lbs! I made it back to my car and got it home. I wiped it clean and there is no rust on it. There is a farm that still uses the field, but not sure if this came off a tractor? Here are the photos. The one is of the only marking I can find on the piece.

Depending on how exact your measurements and weight, it would appear to be a Copper Alloy, namely Cupronickel. However, there are also Stainless Steels that are very close in weight.

What state/area did you find this in, and at what depth? How was it oriented in the earth?

If your neighbors use a VERY large tractor, you might also ask them if they have any ideas. 1 1/4" is pretty darn thick!

possibly was used in series with other sheets in a container for tractor weights.
With that particular size, shape, and lack of other utility evidence, I would agree a metal weight often located on front of farm field tractors.

First off I'd have shown the farmer that find and see if he knows where it may have come from, and he may be very grateful that you found a piece that he may have thought he misplaced.

All of the tractor weights I've seen have been made from cast iron, concrete (usually encapsulated) or lead (back when lead wasn't known for killing the next 3 generations of kids if you looked at it).

Where are you located? Could it be a part from the Space Shuttle Columbia that crashed several years ago?

Is there any evidence of broken welds along the edges ? It looks like a wear plate from a loader bucket.
