5 Dollar Gold Note?

I am at my father-in-law's house and he is showing my wife and I some of his collection. In this collection there is a 5 Dollar Federal Reserve Note series of 1928 A, that states it is redeemable in gold. The emblem on the left hand side with the number 9 in it states, "The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis Minnesota. Is this real? Were they in circulation? Are they rare now? I just can't seem to find many internet topics about them. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Travis

The payable in gold clause was removed in 1934.

Can't tell if your bill is genuine from the picture,it could be.

I learned something from PBK's wickpedia link.
It had better info than this book I have which says it could be worth VF $24.00-$45.00 CU.

Here is a pic another neat one, a brown seal 1933 Minneapolis Fed Res.

Nice note, did you do the editing on it(serial #'s)?I have a $10.00 bill same series, different city.Although not an actual "gold certificate" or "national gold bank note" they are still collectible.Yours lists for $215.00 in the blackbook in uncirculated crisp condition. All Federal Reserve Notes printed between 1914 and 1934 had this "gold clause" on it.Not so rare, condition means everything.Average circulated condition will only be worth about $8.00 according to Blackbook. :)

The 1928 red seals were "United States Notes".The one shown here is a "Federal Reserve Note".Certain notes can be brown, blue, red yellow or green. It depends on the series.HTH. :)

The Series of 1928 that reflected Minneapolis were:
Series of 1928: signed by Tate and Mellon: Green seal
Series of 1928 A: signed by Woods and Mellon: Green seal; and
Series of 1928 B: Signed by Woods and Mellon: Green seal.
The "A" series in the black Federal Reserve Seal has a number
The "B" series in the same area has a letter.
Don..
