I confess, I was supposed to get my tractor out of the mud today, however I just couldn't pass up a day filled with sunshine, so I hopped on my wheeler & took off to go digging. I didn't bring my metal detector this time as there is just so much, however I brought a screen & have been sifting everything. Does anyone know anything about this star thing? Is it a badge of some sort? I'm in an area where I'm finding old clay pipes, coins from the mid 1800's, I think they are in another post? But here's from this morning, I'm going to dig until it's hard to see, I have to take advantage of days like today. Thank you in advance to those with information on the "star."

I believe that your star is a reunion metal from the GAR. I think there was a ribbon and a pin attached to the top. Someone will know more I'm sure.

Actually there aren't any marks signifying a pin of sorts, nor are there any holes where a ribbon might go through? I'll clean it up a little better when I get home. Thank you so much for the response.

G.A.R. Badge or commemorative badge. Nice item. I can’t read the bottom word(s). I’d venture a guess that it isn’t a commemorative; looks authentic to me.

Good find. The way the badge was suspended from its medallic ribbon is shown in the Wiki entry for the GAR:

Your absolutely correct, the bottom reads 1861-Veteran-1866 I believe? I can try & get some better pics, I didn't want to clean it too much as I don't want to ruin it. I wanted to show you what I think might be a "gun trigger? " Guess I'll have to do another post in today's finds. I'm still fairly new here so I apologize. 🙃🙃

Your absolutely correct, after cleaning it up I did find 2 little holes where a pin would have been. It has some weight to it. My goal is to go back & hopefully find the eagle to it. 🤞🤞

Sorry, forgot to attach the pics. Anyway, if you zoom in, you'll see the tiny pin holes. Again, thank you. 😊
